A Bethany man has been sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in a fight in Maryville that killed a Northwest Missouri State student.
Kevin D. Mooney, 32, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of involuntary manslaughter September 3. Based on a plea agreement, Atchison County Circuit Judge Roger Prokes sentenced Mooney to six years in prison.
A co-defendant, Tony Overlin, also of Bethany, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and earlier this month was sentenced to six years in prison.

The pair were originally charged with murder. According to police, they got into a fight with Tomarken Smith outside Molly’s Dance Club and Bar in Maryville in September of last year.
Smith died later at the hospital. He was a senior at Northwest, studying pre-professional studies and coaching.
