Sixty years ago this weekend a six year old boy was kidnapped in Kansas City and murdered in Saint Joseph for $600,000. Author John Heidenry says the two killers took little Bobby Greenlease from a Catholic school on September 28, 1953. They told the school the boy’s mother had a heart attack and was in the hospital. Carl Hall and Bonnie Heady drove Bobby to a field, killed him, and buried his body in a flower garden at Bonnie Heady’s home in Saint Joseph.
They went to Saint Louis with the ransom money money Bobby’s father paid and were arrested a short time later. They died side-by-side in the gas chamber at the Missouri State Penitentiary. Half the ranson money was recovered. What happened to the rest is still a mystery.
