Some of you have said you’d attend a counter-protest, but school and police officials would prefer that you didn’t.

The Westboro Baptist Church, notorious for picketing everything from military funerals to Country music concerts in its crusade against gay rights, has announced it would picket at Central High School Friday afternoon.

The church called Central a “moral wasteland.”

“The high schools of doomed-America are wastelands, utterly void of any knowledge, learning, truth, decency or hope,” blared the church Web site. That was the same day four Central students were honored by the National Merit Society.

We notice at least 84 of you have said you’d attend a counter-protest organized on Facebook.

But local police and school officials would prefer that you NOT go to Central this afternoon. Police will be there, but they’re hoping they won’t be needed, and they’re hoping you, and the church, don’t show up.
