New Highway Surface Helps Tires Grip Pavement

high frictionThe Missouri Department of Transportation is testing a new pavement treatment that helps tires grip the road. Research Engineer Jennifer Harper says High Friction Surface Treatment is also being tried in Kentucky, with good results. The treatment provides a rougher-than-normal surface which reduces skidding in all conditions and which channels rain and melting snow away from tires.

Missouri is one of 13 states that received federal grants to test innovative road and bridge products. Harper says High Friction Surface Treatment is more expensive than ordinary treatments, so its use in Missouri would be in selected locations. It’s being tested in two locations in Jefferson City and two on Interstate 44.
