SW Missouri town wins stamp sales contest

Screen Shot 2013-11-04 at 6.49.48 AMA southwest Missouri town has won a national monthlong contest for sales of the 55-cent breast cancer stamp.

Carl Junction Postmaster Sharon Clark learned recently that Carl Junction had won the contest.

This October marks Carl Junction’s fifth time competing. By close of business Thursday, Carl Junction’s stamp sales amounted to more than $47,000. The second-place finisher was the Gulfport post office, which serves 70,000 people, with total sales of about $34,000. Carl Junction’s population is 7,511.

The stamp was first issued in 1998. As of October 2012, the stamp had raised more than $76 million for breast cancer research.

As a breast cancer survivor, Clark has a personal stake in the contest, but she credits the community for achieving the national No. 1 ranking.
