(AP) – Police say an assistant football coach at Missouri Southern State University was fatally shot as another man confronted his estranged wife.
Jeffery L. Bruner, of Joplin, is charged with felony murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of Missouri Southern offensive line coach Derek Moore. Police said in a news release Monday that the 39-year-old Moore was leaving a Joplin movie theater Friday night when Bruner shot him. Police said that after Moore fell to the ground, Bruner fired more rounds.
Bruner is jailed in Jasper County. It isn’t immediately clear if he has an attorney.
The new details about the case emerged as the university prepared for a memorial service Monday afternoon. The university also is planning a moment of silence for Moore at Saturday’s football game.
