The Northwest Missouri DWI Task Force is cracking down on impaired drivers.

The task force will a sobriety checkpoint in the month of November in Buchanan County.

Police say impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities.

In 2012 there were 230 people killed and 868 seriously injured in crashes that involved at least one impaired driver.

Consequences of drunk driving include jail time, loss of a driver’s license, or the mandated use of ignition interlock devices. Other financial costs include attorney fees, court fees, lost time at work, increased insurance rates and potential loss of employment.

If you cause a fatal crash while intoxicated you can be charged with involuntary manslaughter, a felony resulting in up to seven years of jail time, a $5,000 fine or both.
