Because of the appeals court ruling against the red light camera ordinance in Ellisville, Missouri, the city of Saint Joseph has temporarily suspended enforcement of red light camera violations.
The city says its ordinance is adequate under the ruling except for a provision designating violations as “non-moving,” without assessment of points against a driver’s license. That’s in conflict with Missouri law, according to the court of appeals.
The Saint Joseph Police Department is discussing deactivation of the cameras with its vendor, American Traffic Solutions. In the meantime, no notices of violations are being issued.
American Traffic Solutions says it plans to appeal the new ruling to the Missouri Supreme Court. The ruling comes two years after the same court found that ordinances similar to the Saint Joseph and Ellisville laws were legal.
