The world’s largest seagoing vessel is out of dry dock in South Korea, where Shell unveiled the massive Prelude.
The floating gas plant is 1,601 feet from stem to stern, making it taller than the Empire State Building if stood on end.
The energy company plans to tow it to a strategic location off the west coast of Australia and park it there for 25 years. The Prelude won’t be able to travel under its own power.
The 600,000-ton behemoth serves as a liquefied natural gas processing facility, chilling natural gas into liquid form near the site of deep-sea gas wells. The liquified form is easier to store and ship.
