District seeks your help to name new schools

St. Joseph School DistThe St. Joseph School District is asking the public for name suggestions for the two elementary schools currently being built.

The northeast school is located at Cook and Bishop Roads, and the Carden Park school is located at 16th and Duncan Streets. Both are set to open for the 2014-15 school year.

Residents of St. Joseph are invited to submit name suggestions by filling out a quick online form at http://goo.gl/jRiqbC, visiting the District website at www.sjsd.k12.mo.us under “News/Announcements,” or submitting their suggestion to Brian Shindorf, 671-4000. Parents can also fill out a suggestion form at their child’s school. Suggestions should include the name and why the name was recommended.

Board Policy FF provides guidelines for choosing school names. Name suggestions should be: presidents; statesmen or heroes of national, state and local fame; national, state or local educators; community or civic leaders; or geographic regions or locations.

“I think there is huge potential here,” said Brian Shindorf, Director of Elementary Education. “Naming a school is a big deal, and we hope community members will take advantage of the opportunity to help us out.”

Community members will have the opportunity to submit name suggestions through Dec. 20. Then a board-appointed committee will meet to narrow the names down to five, which will be presented to the board. The board will make the final decision.
