Student, 7, Brings Loaded Handgun To School

SJSD cropAn investigation is underway and parents are being notified after a student at Lindbergh Elementary School was spotted showing a loaded, semi-automatic handgun to another student.

Dr. Jake Long, the St Joseph School District’s Director of Student Services, says there were no threats to either students or staff and no injuries were reported. The youngster was sent home with a parent.

“That weapon was confiscated and the police department was notified,” Dr Long said. “Appropriate procedural disciplinary actions are being taken.”

St Joseph police detectives have determined where the weapon came from but are not releasing that information.

Captain Jeff Wilson of the St Joseph Police Department says officers contacted the parents at home. The young boy’s father was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant.

Officials say the student could be suspended for up to ten days by the principal at Lindbergh. After that, the district takes over the case. Under federal Safe School guidelines, the student could face a much longer suspension at the district level.

Tuesday afternoon district officials were notifying parents of students at Lindbergh.

“Our number-one goal is the safety and security of all of our students,” Long said, “and we’re going to make sure that that continues to be our first priority.”
