Bearcats win fourth straight with 35-point victory at Southwest Baptist

NWMSUThe Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team set a season high in first half points with 54 as the Bearcats defeated Southwest Baptist on Thursday, 104-69.

Northwest jumped out of the gate on an offensive tear with a 19-4 run. The defense also stepped up in the first half, holding SBU to 32 points on just 35% field goal shooting as they went into halftime with a 54-32 lead.

DeShaun Cooper led the Bearcats in scoring in the first half with 15 points as he was 8-for-8 from the free throw line. As a team, Northwest was 17-of-20 from the line.

The offense did not slow down in the second half as they added another 50 points to their totals for a final score of 104-69 in the victory.

The Bearcats had six players finish with double figures. Cooper led the way with 22 points on the night followed by Bryston Williams who had 18.

Zach Schneider followed up is 19 point performance against Northeastern with 16 points, while pulling down eight rebounds. Conner Crooker, Grant Cozad and Dillon Starzl finished with 15 points, 13 points and 12 points, respectively.

Northwest moves to 12-5 overall and leads the MIAA at 7-1 on the year. The Bearcats will be in action Saturday, at home, as they take on Central Missouri with tip-off scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Mizzou falls on the road at Vanderbilt, 78-75

MUNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Rod Odom scored a career-high 24 points, hitting six 3-pointers, and the short-handed Vanderbilt Commodores beat Missouri 78-75 Thursday night in the Tigers’ first visit to Memorial Gym as a member of the Southeastern Conference.

Vanderbilt (9-6, 1-2) snapped a two-game skid by avoiding foul trouble and hitting a season-high 12 3-pointers. The Commodores are down to seven scholarship players after leading scorer Eric McClellan first was suspended from the university, then kicked off the team for good last week. They lost their first two games without McClellan.

Missouri (13-3, 1-2) now has lost two of three. The Tigers were looking for their third road win this season trying to work their way back into the Top 25.

Kyle Fuller added 22 points for Vanderbilt. Dai-Jon Parker had 11, and Damian Jones added 10.

Jabari Brown scored 22 points for Missouri, while Jordan Clarkson had 18 and Ross 11.

The Tigers opened the second half by scoring the first eight points in taking their first lead since the opening bucket on a layup by Williams at 40-39. The teams swapped the lead back and forth before Fuller finished off a fast-break with a layup for Vanderbilt putting the Commodores back ahead 45-44 with 13:30 to go. That started a 10-2 spurt featuring a pair of 3s from Odom, the second giving Vandy a 53-46 lead with 10:52 remaining.

Misssouri pulled within 60-57 on a jumper by Brown with 4:17 left. First Fuller hit a 3-pointer, then Odom added his sixth 3 to push the lead to 66-59 with 2:00 left. The Tigers couldn’t get closer than the final score on a 3-pointer by Clarkson with 2 seconds left as Vanderbilt went 6 of 7 at the free throw line in the final 40 seconds with Fuller hitting all six of attempts at the line to seal the win.

These are two of the SEC’s best shooting teams and the league’s best defending against the 3-pointer with Vanderbilt (27.8 percent) just ahead of Missouri (28.6 percent). The Commodores shredded Missouri’s defense as they knocked down 3 after 3 and finished 12 of 32 (37.5 percent) – both season-highs allowed by the Tigers. That more than made up for Missouri outrebounding Vanderbilt 45-35 and the Tigers’ 36-16 scoring edge in the paint.

Missouri opened the game with a 3 by Brown for the Tigers’ biggest lead of the game.

Then Vanderbilt went on a 17-2 run started by a 3-pointer from Odom and Parker. Missouri countered with its own 14-4 run to get close. But the Commodores led 39-32 at halftime because they shot better from beyond the arc than they did inside as they hit 8 of their first 16 3-pointers.

Northwest women remain winless on the road with loss at SBU

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball team could not complete the comeback as the Bearcats fell to MIAA foe Southwest Baptist on Thursday, 84-72.

SBU started the game by not missing a shot and pulled out to an early 21-5 lead in the first eight minutes of the contest. From then on Northwest was battling to get back in the game.

Northwest shot 41% in the first half compared to SBU who had shot a season high 68% from the floor and headed into halftime with a 16 point lead, 46-30.

Ariel Easton finished the first half leading the Bearcats in scoring with 10 points.

Northwest worked hard in the second half to claw their way back into the game. At one point in the first half the Bearcats were down 23, but with under two minutes to play, Annie Mathews had a steal which led to Ashleigh Nelson scoring on a layup. The lead was cut to five, 73-68.

The Bearcats were unable to pull off the comeback as they fell to SBU 84-72.

Annie Mathews finished one rebound shy of a double-double as she led the team in scoring with 20 points. Easton had 19 points, seven assists and added four rebounds.

Northwest falls to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in MIAA action. The Bearcats will be back in action in Bearcat Arena Saturday as they take on No. 8 Central Missouri with tip-off scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Mo. Senator Files Medicaid Overhaul Plan

Republican Sen. Gary Romine, of Farmington
 Sen. Gary Romine, of Farmington

(AP) – The Senate chairman of a Missouri Medicaid study panel has introduced a plan to revamp the health care program without expanding it.

Republican Sen. Gary Romine, of Farmington, filed legislation Thursday that would expand the use of managed care plans and provide financial incentives for patients to hold down their medical costs.

Romine’s legislation largely follows the recommendations of a special committee he lead last year. It makes no mention of expanding Medicaid eligibility for lower-income adults as allowed under President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Missouri’s Republican legislative leaders have repeatedly said they want to overhaul the Medicaid program – not enlarge it.

Romine’s bill would let Medicaid enrollees who chose high-deductible health plans, but don’t incur many costs, keep a portion of the savings.

Royals make three moves Thursday

riggertRoyalsThe Kansas City Royals announced Thursday that the club has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with left-handed pitcher Tim Collins for the 2014 season, avoiding arbitration.

The 24-year-old Collins spent his third full season in the Major Leagues in 2013, going 3-6 with a 3.54 ERA in 66 appearances out of the bullpen.  His 66 relief appearances ranked second on the Royals, behind only closer Greg Holland’s 68.  The 5-foot-7 lefty recorded 52 strikeouts in 53.1 innings of work, giving him 205 K’s with the Royals, which ranks ninth all-time among Kansas City relief pitchers.  Collins is 12-14 with a 3.51 ERA in 206 appearances at the big league level.

Kansas City also signed pitcher Guillermo Mota to a minor league contract for the 2014 season, which includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training, which opens on Friday, February 14 in Surprise, AZ, when pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report.

Mota, 40, last pitched in the Major Leagues in 2012 with the San Francisco Giants.  He made 26 relief appearances for San Francisco that season, going 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA, recording 24 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.  The right-handed reliever began his career in 1999 with the Montreal Expos and has pitched for six other organizations: Los Angeles Dodgers (2002-04, 2009), Florida (2004-05), Cleveland (2006) New York Mets (2006-07), Milwaukee (2008) and San Francisco (2010-12).  He is 39-45 in 743 appearances (all in relief) with a 3.94 ERA.  Since 1999, only five other pitchers have made more relief appearances than Mota.

And the Royals also signed two-time All-Star pitcher Brad Penny to a minor league contract for the 2014 season, which includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training.

Penny, 35, is a two-time All-Star (2006-07) with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning 16 games in each season.  He led the National League in winning percentage in 2007 (.800), going 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA (70 ER in 208.0 innings).  The right-handed hurler last pitched in the Major Leagues in 2012, with the San Francisco Giants, going 0-1 with a 6.16 ERA in 22 appearances out of the bullpen.  Penny has pitched in 13 Major League seasons, spending time with Florida (2000-04), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2004-08), Boston (2009), San Francisco (2009, 2012), St. Louis (2010) and Detroit (2011).  He was originally a fifth round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 1996 draft.  The veteran pitcher has helped three different teams reach the postseason, including in 2003 when he was a member of the World Champion Marlins’ starting rotation.  Penny went 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA in two World Series starts that season against the Yankees.

Feds seek to shield evidence in suicide bomb case

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Federal prosecutors want to shield some evidence in the case of a Wichita man accused of plotting a suicide bombing at Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport, where he worked as an avionics technician.

A filing Thursday asks the court to limit who can see formerly classified information that has been declassified in order to prosecute 58-year-old Terry Loewen.

Prosecutors allege Loewen tried to get what he believed was a car bomb onto the tarmac on Dec. 13. Charges include attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted material support to al-Qaida.

The government wants to protect identities of undercover agents and use of sensitive sources and methods.

Prosecutors say Loewen gave the FBI a statement that encompasses five DVDs. It has already disclosed 948 pages of reports and 636 photographs.

Boehner: House won’t repeal flood insurance hikes

Floodwaters Line US-136

(AP) — Speaker John Boehner says the GOP-controlled House won’t take up legislation aimed at neutering a 2012 overhaul of the federal flood insurance program that is hitting homeowners who have long paid below-market rates with big premium hikes.

The Ohio Republican said “we’re not going to do that” when the topic was broached in a hallway exchange with The Associated Press in the Capitol complex.

The bipartisan 2012 overhaul of the much-criticized flood insurance program is requiring owners of vacation homes, frequently-flooded properties, and businesses to lose their subsidized rates over time. Other homeowners can keep their subsidies but can’t pass them on when selling their houses, which has caused a disruption in home sales.

The Senate will shortly take up legislation to delay major elements of the 2012 law.
