KU’s Seldon named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

KUAfter averaging 22 points in his first two conference games, Kansas freshman Wayne Selden, Jr., has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in a vote of a media panel who covers the league, the conference announced Monday.

Selden helped the Jayhawks start 2-0 in conference play as KU won at Oklahoma (90-83) and defeated Kansas State (86-60). The Roxbury, Mass., guard opened the week with a career-best 24 points, including five 3-pointers, in the win in Norman. The five 3-pointers were the most in a game by a Jayhawk this season. Selden then added 20 points and four boards versus the Wildcats, connecting on 7-of-10 shots from the field. For the week, Selden shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from beyond the arc. He totaled six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

This is the first time Selden has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week and he is the fourth different Jayhawk to win a rookie award this season. Selden joins teammates Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid and Tarik Black who have also earned the honor in 2013-14. The KU foresome surpasses its previous high of three different Big 12 Newcomer of the Week selections established in 2005-06 (Brandon Rush, Mario Chalmers and Julian Wright). Historically, Iowa State in 2011-12 was the last school to have four different student-athletes named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

Earlier this season sophomore Perry Ellis was named the co-Big 12 Player of the Week on Nov. 18, the same week Wiggins was named newcomer.

Which Missourians are using the new Health Website ?

healthcare(AP) – More older than younger people in Missouri have been signing up for health insurance through a federally run website.

Figures released Monday by the U.S. government show about 33,000 individuals in Missouri selected a plan through the HealthCare.gov website as of Dec. 28. Of those, about 58 percent were age 45 or older.

Younger adults ages 18-34 accounted for one-quarter of the enrollees in Missouri. That’s similar to the national average.

People who are younger or healthier typically pay more into an insurance system than they take out, thus helping to offset the health care costs of older adults.

The new federal figures also show that more Missouri women than men are signing up for insurance policies through the federal website. That also is similar to the national average.

A criminal information filed Monday in U.S. District Court charges Havana city clerk Diana Cox with bank fraud and wire fraud.

Calls to Cox’s home were unanswered, and court records showed no attorney.

Prosecutors say that, as city clerk, Cox went to Arvest Bank in Caney with a document purporting to be City Council minutes stating that only one signature was required on the city’s checks.

Acting on the document, the bank allowed nearly $15,000 worth of city checks made out to Cox to be cashed or deposited into her personal account.

Prosecutors also charged Cox with defrauding Cross Point Baptist Church in Caney of more than $44,000.

Group working on Medicaid plan, but GOP wary

TOPEKA (AP) — The Kansas Hospital Association is working on a proposed alternative to expanding Medicaid under the federal health care overhaul, but Republican leaders remain wary.

Hospital Association Vice President Cindy Samuelson said Monday that the association doesn’t know what form its proposal will take.

One option is using additional federal funds promised under the federal health care law to help Kansans buy private coverage. Arkansas and Iowa are taking that approach.

Samuelson said the association is seeking what she called a unique Kansas solution.

Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and GOP legislative leaders are still critical of the federal health care overhaul championed by Democratic President Barack Obama.

The hospital association has hired a firm headed by former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt to help with a plan.

Plea hearing set in Kansas prescription drug case

Dr. Michael P. Schuster

(AP) — A change of plea hearing has been scheduled for a Kansas doctor accused of illegally distributing prescription drugs from his Manhattan pain clinic.

Dr. Michael P. Schuster has been in federal custody since he pleaded not guilty to a four-count indictment in May 2013. Schuster is now scheduled to appear Thursday in U.S. District Court in Topeka.

His attorney did not immediately return messages Monday seeking comment on the planned change of plea.

Federal prosecutors allege Schuster allowed unlicensed employees to write prescriptions for strong painkillers while he was traveling, using blank forms that he had signed. Investigators said the practice went on for at least five years.

The government planned to seek forfeiture of money and property linked to the alleged scheme at Schuster’s trial later this year.

Attorney General Eric Holder said those affected include people in the vicinity of the April 15 bombings at the Boston Marathon’s finish line, as well as residents of the neighborhood where a gunfight between the suspects and police took place four days later. The grant money will go to organizations providing direct support to the victims.

Two pressure cooker bombs were detonated near the race’s finish line, killing three spectators and injuring more than 260 people.

Man Sentenced For Robbery, Carjacking, Chase

USDOJA Kansas City, Kan., man was sentenced Monday to 25 years in federal prison on charges arising from an armed robbery and carjacking. US Attorney Barry Grissom says Derrick L. Freeman, 28, pleaded guilty to one count of armed robbery, one count of carjacking, and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.

In his plea, Freeman admitted that on May 12, 2013, he and his co-defendants went to the home of a Kansas City, Kan., man to buy synthetic marijuana.

Once there, they robbed the man at gunpoint. During the robbery, Freeman fired a handgun and then fled the scene before police arrived.

On May 26, 2013, Freeman and co-defendants walked to a Stop Shop gas station at 6865 State Avenue in Kansas City, Kan., where Freeman suggested they “get a car.” They robbed the driver of a 2004 Ford Freestar minivan of wallet and keys and drove away in the victim’s minivan. When the defendants realized officers had spotted their vehicle they led police on a 17-minute chase at speeds up to 112 miles per hour. Topeka Man Gets Lengthy Prison Term For Nebraska Chase; Murder Charges Still Pending

Michael Engstrom
Michael Engstrom
A Topeka man still faces murder charges there, but a judge in Nebraska is making sure he doesn’t see the light of day anytime soon. Michael Engstrom was sentenced Monday for his role in an armed robbery and pursuit across southeastern Nebraska last February.

A Nebraska judge handed down stiff prison sentences for cases in Pawnee and Johnson County, Nebraska.

Engstrom was sentenced to 15 to 20 years for robbery, and 8 to 12 years for attempted possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Those sentences to run consecutively, stem from the robbery of gas station in Pawnee City.

In Johnson County, Engstrom pleaded guilty to five counts of attempted assault on a law officer. Those charges came from his fleeing police after the robbery. Engstrom fired at officers during the high speed pursuit. He ran out of ammunition after getting his car stuck in a field near St. Mary and was arrested. For firing at the officers, Judge Daniel Bryan sentenced Engstrom to an additional 60 to 75 years in prison.

Johnson County Attorney Julie Smith stated that she is pleased with the sentence. “The crimes Engstrom committed were very serious, and a lengthy prison sentence is the appropriate punishment for those crimes.

“It is fortunate that no law enforcement officers, Casey’s employees, passengers in Engstrom’s car, or bystanders were seriously injured or killed during this incident. Michael Engstrom won’t have the opportunity to put innocent people in harm’s way again.”

Engstrom will not be eligible for release until he’s 87 years old.

Engstrom still faces a murder charge in Topeka, Kansas. Smith said she expects prosecutors there to seek his extradition soon.

Engstrom’s wife Jamie was also charged in the case. She’s serving six to ten years in prison for Nebraska charges, and awaits trial for the Topeka homicide.

Both are charged with murder and attempted murder in Shawnee County, Kansas for a shooting near downtown Topeka that claimed the life of Ricky Mitchell and injured Bridget Gakle.

Michael Engstrom also faces a federal indictment on unrelated weapons charges.

They were married two days before the murder.
