USDOJ colorA registered sex offender living in the country illegally in St Joseph has been sentenced by a federal judge for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.

US Attorney Tammy Dickinson says Raul Guadalupe Ocon-Marin, 32, was sentenced to two years and six months in federal prison without parole.

Report: Fewer winter wheat acres this year?

Screen Shot 2014-01-10 at 12.54.16 PM (AP) — The first government forecast of the growing season shows U.S. farmers planted fewer acres of winter wheat for harvest this year.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Friday that the 41.9 million planted acres are down 2 percent from last year. Seeding for the 2014 winter wheat crop began in August.

Plantings of hard red winter wheat, used to make bread, were estimated to be up 2 percent at 30.1 million acres.

Significantly more hard red wheat acres were seeded in Colorado, Montana and North Dakota. Those helped offset large acreage decreases in Kansas, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Utah had a record low acreage, while North Dakota seeded a record high number of wheat acres.

Kansas planted 8.8 million acres of winter wheat, down 7 percent from a year ago.

Mo. Man sentenced in Prison in Cocaine Case

cocaine(AP) – A California man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison after about 13.3 pounds of cocaine were found in his vehicle in northwest Missouri.

Platte County prosecutor Eric Zahnd announced Friday that 37-year-old Marcos Gonzalez, of Stockton, Calif., was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty in October to first-degree drug trafficking. Zahnd says the cocaine was valued at $600,000.

In April 2013, a Platte County deputy stopped Gonzalez’s U-Haul van for a routine traffic violation. While searching the van, the deputy found heat sealer and rubber bands, which Zahnd says are commonly used to package narcotics and bulk cash. The deputy found the cocaine inside the bottom lining of three black suitcases.

(AP) – The chairman of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus is stepping down.

Democratic Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, of St. Louis, said Friday that she decided to resign because some members of the 17-member group were upset about her appearance with Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder at a news conference in December.

Nasheed and Kinder were criticizing the decision of a state commission to delay low-income housing tax credits, as part of an informal deal to pass new tax incentives for Boeing.

She became the chair in 2013, after her election to the state Senate. She previously served six years in the House.

Nasheed says the group’s vice-chairman – Democratic Rep. Brandon Ellington, of Kansas City – will take over her duties until the caucus elects a successor.
