New Year’s DWI & Crash Summary

MSHP trooper in trafficThis year’s New Year’s Eve holiday fell in the middle of the week, and officials say that might have contributed to a tapered-down DWI total Tuesday.  According to online records from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there were two DWI arrests in Troop-H Tuesday.

A motorist from Chillicothe was arrested for drunk driving Tuesday afternoon, and an Omaha man was arrested for DWI in Andrew County Tuesday evening.

Troopers worked several accidents in our area on New Year’s Day.

A three-vehicle pileup on I-29 north of St Joseph sent two people to the hospital, including a seven year old boy.  Investigators say David Sears of St Joseph was merging onto I-29 from I-229 when he lost control of his Nissan in the snow.

The Nissan was hit from the rear by one vehicle and then pushed into a semi.

All three drivers escaped without injuries. Two people in the Nissan, 27-year-old Heather and 7-year-old David Sears were transported to Heartland with minor injuries.  Both were treated and released.

A local teenager was injured in a New Year’s Day crash. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol 19-year-old Haley M. Loucks was driving a Dodge Stratus north on I-29 and lost control in the snow.

The Stratus rotated 180 degrees and struck a stationary 2010 International truck. Loucks was transported to Heartland Hospital.

A single-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in Harrison County sent both occupants to the hospital with minor injuries.

Joseph Binkley of Lamoni, Iowa and Nikie Kirk of Cainesville, Missouri were injured when Binkley’s Dodge Caravan left the snow-covered US-136 highway. The minivan overturned in a Ravine.

Both victims were taken to Harrison County Community Hospital.

St. Jo man tells judge he wants to go back to prison

(AP)  jail A Missouri man says he meant to get caught in November when he tried to rob a St. Joseph convenience store.

When the man asked the clerk to open the cash register and give him the money, the clerk refused — even after 43-year-old Roy Murphy offered to put on the camouflage ski mask he was carrying.

Murphy was prepared to plead guilty Monday to second-degree robbery. But Circuit Judge Patrick Robb told him there was no threat of physical force, so he couldn’t convict Murphy of the charge.

Murphy told the judge he doesn’t know how to make it outside of prison and wanted to go back.

Robb accepted a lesser felony charge and sentenced Murphy to four years.

(AP) – A Missouri judge has ordered the Archdiocese of St. Louis to release by the end of the working day Friday the names of all priests accused of sexual abuse in the past 20 years.

St. Louis Circuit Judge Robert Dierker’s disclosure order also includes the names of those who made the complaints.

The judge said the archdiocese could withhold the names of those involved in cases the church determined were “unsubstantiated,” leaving it unclear what the archdiocese will ultimately release from 234 complaints identified by the court.

A woman who is suing a defrocked priest, the archdiocese and Archbishop Robert Carlson sought the records. She alleges former priest Joseph Ross began abusing her 16 years ago.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A monthly economic report suggests supply managers surveyed in nine Midwestern and Plains states are optimistic about the regional economy over the next six months.

The confidence index for the Mid-America Business Conditions Index jumped to 66.5 last month from 57.2 in November. However, the overall index rose just 2 points, to 53.2 from 51.2 in November.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says businesses tied to agriculture continue to report softer economic conditions.

The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth, while a score below that suggests decline.

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A group Kansas House members has filed legislation for the 2014 session that would add three southeast counties to the state’s rural opportunity zone program.

Gov. Sam Brownback established the program in 2011 to help draw new residents and businesses to counties where populations had dropped by 10 percent in the previous decade. People who move to the participating counties are eligible for income tax waivers, as well as tuition repayment for up to five years.

Seventy-three counties already participate. The 2014 legislation would add Cherokee, Labette and Montgomery counties, which are located on the Oklahoma border.

The bill is sponsored by Republican Reps. Jim Kelly of Independence, Michael Houser of Columbus, Virgil Peck of Tyro and Richard Proehl of Parsons.
