Representative Sam Graves was among those who voted on Monday to support legislation for recipients of post 9/11 G.I. Bill benefits.
He wrote on Facebook, “Last night the House passed the G.I. Bill Tuition Fairness Act. It would allow veterans to attend the public colleges and universities of their choice at the in-state tuition rate. Currently, veterans often have a difficult time establishing legal residency where they live. This is a commonsense bill that makes it easier for our nation’s brave men and women to continue furthering their education and use the G.I. Bill to its fullest potential.”
Currently, if a veteran chooses to attend college in a state where they have not established residency to the satisfaction of the school, they are faced with two choices: Pay the difference between in-state and more costly out-of-state tuition rates, or wait to register until they have established residency, which can take up to a year in some states.
Fourteen states have already initiated the process to ensure fairness for recipients these benefits.
