SAVANNAH, Mo. – Carl S. Gee, 91, died Saturday, February 8, 2014 at a local healthcare facility.
He was born September 20, 1922 to Walter Christopher and Marguerite (Stanton) Gee in Savannah.
He married Virginia Hoffelmeyer on June 12, 1946. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2012.
Carl taught classes to veterans when they returned from World War II. He was a director of Federal Land Bank in St. Joseph for many years and was the last of three generations of twin boys. He was a member of Savannah Masonic Blue Lodge #71.
During his many years of farming he was ahead of his time in agricultural innovations and was the fourth generation to farm in Andrew County.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, Caryl Gee.
Survivors: son, Roy Gee (Kathleen), Savannah; two grandsons, Timothy Gee (Teri) and Martin Gee (Lacy); three great-granddaughters, Hailey, Gabrielle and Miranda; and one great-grandson, Garrett.
Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home and Crematory. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. ST. JOSEPH – Norman Knight Jungk, 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away Sunday, February 9th, 2014. Norman was born April 25, 1925 in Topeka, Kan. He married Leslie Louise Grubb May 27th, 1944 who survives the home.
He served with the Navy for three years on the battleship Pennsylvania and the converted assault ship LCI 1056 in the Pacific theatre during WWII. Following his service he studied and graduated from the University of Kansas with Bachelor and Master Degrees in microbiology and chemistry and attended the University of Minnesota for further post graduate studies . He was employed in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry from 1953 until 1992. He joined Phillips Roxane, Inc . in 1970 where he served successfully as Director of Quality Control, Pharmaceutical Research , and Regulatory Affairs. While there he assisted the development of two vaccines for measles.
Norman served as chairmen of the Committee on Biologicals of the Animal Health Institute in 1974. In 1977 he received an Award for Special Assistance on the National Symposium on Rabies held at Guadalajara, Mexico. He was cited by the United State Department of Agriculture for outstanding and distinguished leadership in the development of standard test requirements for veterinary medicine. He retired from Philips Roxane’s successor company Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica , Inc. in December 1992.
Following retirement, along with his wife Leslie Louise, he was active 3 days a week for 12 years as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Kansas City in the construction of low cost affordable housing for the working poor in the inner city of Kansas City, MO. During his 12 years with Habitat he assisted in the construction of over 95 homes. He also served to provide counselling, encouragement and support when needed and was given the unofficial title as advocate for Habitat home owners. In December 2002 Norman was given an honorary dinner and the first Kansas City Habitat annual award as Volunteer of the Year.
Norman was an Eagle Scout and was given the honor of placing the eagle sash on his great-grandson Keifer in 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Emma Jungk. Surviving are his wife Leslie Louise of the home, five sons and their spouses: David H. Jungk, Ocala, Fla.; Donald N. Jungk and wife Patricia, Oaxaca, Mexico; Dale W. Jungk and wife Mary Babbs, St. Joseph; Dana Allen Jungk and wife Lola, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Mark L. Jungk and wife Mary Beth, Platte City, Mo.; one brother, Warren Jungk and wife Barbara, Bluffton, S.C.; brother-in-law, Max Gerald Grubb and wife Roda, McAllen , Texas; five grandchildren and spouses: Erica Jungk Martin, St. Joseph; Misti Heide and husband Brian, Mountain Home, Ark.; Adam Jungk, Brooklyn, N.Y. ; Amanda Jungk, St. Joseph; Brian Jungk, St. Joseph, and six great grandchildren: Keifer, Conner and Mattie Martin; Emily and Macie Heide, and Cadence Buckler.
Memorial Service 7 p.m., Wednesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hands of Hope Hospice, St. Joseph, Habitat for Humanity, Kansas City, Mo., or to Benedictine College, Atchison, Kan.
ST. JOSEPH – Janice “Jan” Gail Johnson, 56, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014 at her home. She was born November 4, 1957 in St. Joseph, daughter of Ida May and Richard Pummell. She graduated from Benton High School in 1976 and married Max Johnson June 18, 1976. She was a Homemaker who liked taking long rides with her husband Max, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a Christian. Janice was preceded in death by mother, Ida May Pummell.
Survivors include, husband, Max Johnson of the home; father, Richard Pummell of St. Joseph; son, Josh Johnson and wife Janessa; and daughter, Sara Stein and husband Michael all of St. Joseph; seven grandchildren, Chyann, Aubry, Hagan, Carson, Hunter, Ruby May, and Austin; four brothers, Richard Pummell Jr. of DeKalb, Mo.; Melvin Pummell of Savannah, Mo.; Mitchell Pummell of Halls, Mo.; and Phillip Pummell of St. Joseph; a sister, Audrey Tolson of St. Joseph.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Rupp Funeral Home, with Pastor Greg Dixon officiating.
