(AP) – The Missouri House has endorsed legislation that would make a woman seeking an abortion wait 72 hours after seeing a doctor before the procedure could be performed.

Missouri’s current waiting period is 24 hours. Only two states now mandate a three-day wait.

The House gave the bill first-round approval Wednesday on a 115-37 vote. A second House vote would move it to the Senate, which began debating its own version Wednesday evening.

Republicans support the bill and argue that women need more time to make such an important decision. Democrats object and say it placed more restrictions on abortion rights.

The House legislation would also require Missouri officials to develop a video about the procedure to include in a packet of information given to women seeking abortions.
