1 of 11 starving horses euthanized after rescue

Screen Shot 2014-03-06 at 5.23.48 PMLEBANON, Mo. (AP) — One of 11 horses rescued from a south-central Missouri property last week has been euthanized.
The Missouri Humane Society says the horses were “emaciated” and dangerously close to death when they were seized Friday from property near Lebanon in Laclede County.
The Humane Society’s Jeane Jae tells The Lebanon Daily Record (http://bit.ly/1gdhb69 ) the horses were taken to the organization’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union. One mare was immediately taken to an equine hospital, where her condition continued to deteriorate.
Jae says veterinarians ultimately decided the mare would not recover and had to be put down.
Authorities said the horses had no water, and only limited amounts of poor-quality hay.
The Laclede County sheriff’s office had tried to persuade the owner to either feed the horses or find them new homes.
