Apple Markets in St Joseph, among other local grocery stores, are not included in the eight million pound meat recall as previously reported on Stjosephpost.com.
USDA’s distributors list on the recall, last updated March 8th, does not include Apple Market Stores in St Joseph or any stores in Atchison, Kan. A prior version of the list had included Apple Market and other stores in Atchison.
“The USDA recall listed some stores on their listing that were not carrying the product,” Mike Decker, Owner and Operator of Apple Markets in St Joseph said. “Our three Apple Market’s were listed in that recall but that is totally inaccurate and that has since changed.”
The Association of Wholesale Grocers, distributor for Apple Market, released a statement that reflects the changes made to the USDA list of distributors involved in the recall.
“Associated Wholesale Grocers does not source any fresh beef from Rancho Feeding Corporation,” according to the release.
USDA announced the recall last month due to a processing and inspection issue.
“Rancho Feeding Company, A Petaluma, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 8,742,700 pounds, because it processed diseased and unsound animals and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection,” The Food and Safety Inspection Service report stated.
Still, with the alleged mistake by USDA, safety precautions such as the recall help protect the nations food supply. It should be no secret by now that America has the most abundant, most affordable and safest food supply in the world.
“It is rare, but there are mistakes made,” Decker said. “We understand that, but we want to make sure that everybody feels comfortable with the product that we are serving them and we take the up-most importance in our food safety and sanitation.”
USDA had not returned comment regarding the recall distributors list by Tuesday evening.
