Police say 47 year old John Weipert of Saint Joseph was shot to death by a police officer during a domestic disturbance Monday evening. The officer was Patrick Zeamer, a seven-year veteran of the force.
Investigators say Weipert had a firearm and was threatening suicide. A police negotiator attempted to convince him to put down the weapon, but he refused. Police say when Weipert made threatening acts toward the officers, he was shot by Officer Zeamer.
Emergency Medical personnel pre-positioned nearby responded almost immediately. Weipert was taken to Heartland and pronounced dead. An autopsy was conducted and results are pending.
Officer Zeamer remains on paid administrative leave as the police department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigate. When the investigation is completed the case will be submitted to the Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney for review.
