Now that the weather is starting to warm up, St Joseph police remind us that the city made some changes during the winter months to its ordinance regarding motor scooters.
Under the original City Ordinance many of the popular scooters spotted on the road were illegal to operate on the street unless they are licensed as motorcycles.
Some of the scooters were not manufactured to a standard that the Department of Revenue would issue license plates. This left some owners with scooters that could not be used on the street.
In order to allow for the safe and responsible operation of scooters on the roadways several changes were made to the existing ordinances by the City Council.
In order to operate a scooter that meets the requirements of a motorized bicycle the following are required:
*A valid operator’s license (motorcycle endorsement not required)
*Valid proof of insurance (the same requirement as other motor vehicles)
*DOT approved helmet (the same as required for motorcycles)
Operation is restricted on roadways that are part of the Interstate Highway system or that have a posted speed limit over 35 MPH.
