Missouri Western tennis falls at Emporia State

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western women’s tennis team fell in road MIAA action 8-1 on Friday afternoon. The Griffons had some close matches but fall to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in MIAA play. The Griffons return to action on Tuesday, April 1 with a non-conference match against Truman State University in St. Joseph, Mo. Match time is set for 1:00 pm at the Noyes Tennis Courts.

The Griffons played well in doubles picking up one point when Denise Chiao and Lindsay Beger defeated Taylor Smith and Jenny Gerdhart 9-8 (7-1 tiebreaker) giving the Hornets the 2-1 lead after doubles. Meara Smith and Ceara Boldridge fell 8-3 against Tawni Griffin and Nicole Jara while Alyssa Dougan and Kayla Dysart fell 8-2 at No. 3 doubles against Somer Schmidt and Amy Fugit.

In singles action the Hornets won all six positions. The closest match came at No. 4 singles when Boldridge and Gerdhart went to a tiebreaker. Gerdhart defeated Boldridge 6-2, 1-6 and 10-7. Chiao also played well at No. 3 singles but fell to Smith 6-4 and 6-1. Beger fell 8-5 at No. 5 singles against Schmidt while Dougan fell 6-2 and 6-4 against Fugit at No. 6 singles.

Dysart and Smith struggled at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Dysart fell 6-2 and 6-0 against Griffin while Smith fell 6-1 and 6-1 at No. 2 singles against Jara. The Hornets improve to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in MIAA play.
