An overturned semi has disrupted traffic at the intersection of US 36 and Interstate 29. Saint Joseph police are urging motorists to avoid the area if possible, especially in the eastbound lanes of Highway 36, while the accident is under investigation.

Update – Police now advise southbound traffic on I-29 to also avoid that area because of traffic congestion caused by the accident.

Update – MODOT says the overturned truck spilled cargo over a wide area and cleanup may take several hours.

Update – Roads reopened at 5:40 pm, but with traffic on I-29 still backed up because of the accident.

Saint Joseph police are also recommending that drivers stay away from the area of 36th Street and Mitchell where another accident is under investigation.

Update – this accident is also cleaned up and traffic is back to normal.
