Lawmakers Fall Short on Gun Nullification

Missouri capitolJEFFERSON CITY (AP) – Missouri’s legislative session has come to a close with lawmakers failing to pass a highly-publicized measure that sought to nullify some federal gun laws.

Legislators adjourned Friday evening failing to resolve a dispute among Republicans over how aggressive the bill should be. It would have declared void any federal laws that “infringe on people’s right to keep and bear arms.”

But supporters disagreed over how to punish federal workers who enforced such laws. The penalties varied from subjecting federal workers to civil damages and possible jail time.

The House passed a compromise with minutes left in session, but it was never considered by the Senate.

The Republican-led Legislature did send legislation to the governor Friday that would allow teachers and other school personnel to carry concealed weapons after undergoing training.
