Missouri still owes tax refunds to more than 300K

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — More than 300,000 Missouri residents continue to wait for state income tax refunds totaling more than $139 million.

The Kansas City Star  reports it could be another month before all taxpayers have their refunds, with state officials blaming cash-flow problems for the delay.

As of Thursday Missouri had issued roughly 1.36 million refunds and had about 310,000 remaining to be paid.

The Kansas Department of Revenue says it has 19,000 refunds left to pay out of about 850,000 who claimed them.

Missouri also delayed hundreds of thousands of refunds in 2009 because of the economic downturn.

Missouri Association of Tax Practitioners board member Gerald Geier says the state is not behind on processing refunds, it is just choosing to hold onto the money a little while longer.
