Saint Joseph School Superintendent Dr. Fred Czerwonka says he welcomes a recommendation from the ad-hoc committee examining stipends…to conduct a detailed study of salaries and stipends paid to teachers, administrators, and staff. He says of the 1700-1800 employees in the district, about one third receive stipends.

Czerwonka says salaries and any stipends paid in the Saint Joseph School District need to be completely open. He says he’s not certain whether stipends have ever been paid without knowledge of the school board.

Czerwonka says the practice of paying stipends for extra work goes back decades in the school district, and in many other districts.
