Mo. Inmate Convicted of Attacking Prison Counselor

SPRINGFIELD (AP) – An inmate at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield has been found guilty of assaulting a prison counselor.

The U.S. attorney’s office says 34-year-old Willard Begay was convicted Thursday of hitting the counselor, then smashing a computer printer in the victim’s face. The counselor, Michael Williams, suffered a broken bone near his eye.

Prosecutors say Williams was meeting with Begay in October 2012 to discuss problems he was having with other inmates. Williams was handcuffing Begay before his move to another unit when the attack occurred.

He faces up to 20 years in federal prison without parole and a fine of $250,000.

Begay was serving a sentence of seven years and three months for a conviction in Arizona for assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
