The St. Joseph Mustangs stayed hot Sunday night as they picked up their fourth consecutive victory with a 5-4 win at Clarinda.
St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won 13 of their last 16 games as they improve to 19-6 and 12-6 in the MINK League.
The Mustangs started quick Sunday night with three runs in the first inning as they had four consecutive two-out base hits. Mike Sherburne had an RBI double and Zac Johnson added a two-run single.
St. Joseph added one more in the second inning on a Ryan Abernathy ground out and it stayed that way until the Mustangs took a 5-0 lead in the seventh with an unearned run.
Clarinda then rallied in the eighth inning off St. Joe reliever Reed Morton. Morton walked the bases loaded and the A’s scored two runs on an error by Joe Koerper. They added two more runs on a Danny Matienzo two-run single before Austin Aspregren got two fly balls to right field and Clarinda left two men on base.
Brett Ash earned his 10th save in ten tries as he struck out two and walked one batter in the ninth inning to preserve the win for the Mustangs.
St. Joseph starter Brandon Baker improves to 3-1 with the win as he threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just six hits and striking out seven.
Abernathy and Sherburne each had two hits to lead the Mustangs nine-hit attack.
St. Joe is off until Wednesday when they return to Phil Welch Stadium for a non-league game with the Kansas City Monarchs. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
