Mustangs outlast Sedalia in 14 innings Friday night

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs went to extra innings for the second consecutive game Friday night and they were able to outlast Sedalia 3-2 in 14 innings inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball is now 24-10 and they’re 14-9 in the MINK League.

Sedalia scored a run in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead, but the Mustangs scored two unearned runs in the sixth to grab their first lead in the game.

Zac Johnson hit a ground ball to third and Tony Sandifer made an error that allowed Mike Sherburne and Joe Koerper to score.

The Bombers rally to tie the game with a run in the eighth inning off Mustangs’ starter Jake Jones, who left the game after 7.2 innings.

Jones allowed two runs and six hits, while striking out five and walking four batters.

The score remained 2-2 until the 14th inning when Sherburne hit a 2-out infield single to shortstop to get the walk-off win.  The 14 inning game tied the longest game in Mustangs’ history.

Trent Hill earned the win in relief and he threw 4.2 scoreless innings.  He struck out three and didn’t allow a hit.

St. Joseph is back inside Phil Welch Stadium night as they host Nevada at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM and here on StJosephPost.com.
