The St. Joseph Mustangs won their fourth consecutive game Saturday night at Phil Welch Stadium as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team defeated Nevada 3-2.
The Mustangs got a three-run home run from Mike Sherburne in the fifth inning and that was all the St. Joe pitcher staff would need.
Ryker Fox (6-1) earned the win as he went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on eight hit. Fox struck out seven and walked three batters.
Fox gave up two, two-out base hits to Jake Alexander as he drove in both Nevada runs. The Griffons took the lead in the third and pulled within one run in the seventh inning.
Austin Aspegren got the Mustangs out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning and Jon Pomatto did the same thing in the eighth. Grant Gavin then worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the summer.
Sherburne’s homer in the fifth came after Trent Hill reached base on an error and Joe Koerper was hit by a pitch.
Both team had multiple opportunities to score as they each left 12 men on base.
St. Joseph improves to 25-10 and 15-9 in the MINK League. They’re back in action Sunday night as they play at Clarinda. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ & here on StJosephPost.com.
