Mustangs drop series opener at Sedalia 5-3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs lost at Sedalia Wednesday night 5-3 as they trail the Bombers 1-0 in the best-of-three MINK League Championship Series.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team will have the next two games at home as they’ll have to win both to capture their third MINK League title in four years.

On Wednesday, the Mustangs (38-16) got off to a good start as they scored two runs in the second to take an early lead.  Kyle Richards had an RBI single and then Brandon Huske scored on an error by sedalia left fielder Hunter Leeper.

The Bombers struggled early against St. Joseph starter Ryker Fox as they didn’t get their first hit until the fourth inning, but they grabbed the lead in the fourth with three runs on the three hits.

Sedalia added one in the fifth inning before both teams traded runs in the seventh.

Fox (8-2) suffered just his second loss of the season as he went 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.

Richards led the offense as he finished 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and a walk.  Joe Koerper drove in one run, while Huske, Lucas Powers and Tanner Lubach score one run each.

Game two of the series is Thursday at Phil Welch Stadium.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM and here on StJosephPost.com.
