The St. Joseph Mustangs suffered their first loss of the NBC World Series Sunday night as they fell to Santa Barbara (CA) 11-2 in the second round of the tournament at Lawence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita.
St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 41-17 as they drop to the consolation bracket and will play Valley Center (KS) at 7:00 p.m. Monday.
The Mustangs got out to a quick start Sunday as they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Trent Hill drove in Ryan Abernathy with a single, but that was the only lead St. Joseph would have.
Santa Barbara came back with four unearned runs in the second innings as Mustangs’ third baseman Evan McDonald committed a throwing error that would have ended the inning with no runs scored.
Brandon Huske had an RBI double in the second to pull St. Joe within 4-2, but Santa Barbara added a run in the fourth and broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning.
Santa Barbara scored eight unearned runs in the game as the Mustangs committed three errors.
St. Joseph starter Ryker Fox suffered the loss as he allowed seven hits and nine runs in 5.2 innings of work. Fox allowed only one earned run as he struck out two and walked one.
The Mustangs only had five hits in the game as Abernathy, Hill, Huske, Tanner Lubach and Zac Johnson had one hit each.
Monday’s elimination game for the Mutangs against Valley Center will air live on 680 KFEQ AM.
