Triumph Foods in Saint Joseph is one of six major U.S. pork plants suspended from China’s list of eligible pork exporters. Also delisted were six cold storage facilities including Nor-Am Cold Storage of Saint Joseph.
China says the delistings are because of violations of its ban on ractopamine, a food additive that promotes lean muscle growth.
Other plants suspended include three Tyson plants in Iowa and Indiana, Quality Pork Processors in Austin, Minnesota, and Hormel Foods in Fremont, Nebraska.
China is a major pork consumer. Last year US pork exports to China totaled more than 312,000 tons, worth more than $645-million.
