A man wanted in connection with the rape of a juvenile in Sabetha last weekend remains at large. Police have received reports regarding William Vogel, but the 51-year-old suspect remains at large. One citizen reporting seeing him at a truck stop in St Joseph, but that report has not been confirmed.

A warrant was issued on Monday for Vogel, who is believed to have fled on foot, and may be trying to hitchhike to Texas, Florida or Illinois.

In a statement Thursday, Sabetha Police Chief Robert Wahwasuck said the victim was a juvenile who went through “a very traumatic experience.”

But because the victim is a juvenile, his department is limited on what information they may release to the public. Here’s the entire statement:

“In regards to the disturbing and unsettling event that occurred over the weekend here in Sabetha.
Though I cannot divulge many of the specifics, I will let it be known that mine and my fellow Officers thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by this past weekend’s events.

I realize that many of you have questions and want answer’s, I am certainly one of those individuals as well.

Unfortunately the one man who is suspected to have many of those answers currently appears to be on the run from law enforcement. I would ask that anyone who may be in contact with, or is contacted by, William Lee Vogel encourage him to turn himself in, to authorities.

The victim of this heinous crime was a juvenile and went through a very traumatic experience. Due to the juvenile involvement with this crime, the department is very limited at this time on what we may provide to the public.

I would also like to say that this is an ongoing investigation and William Lee Vogel is a suspect and remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

My department has been working tirelessly around the clock to find out the truth of what went on this past weekend and we will continue to do so until justice has prevailed. “
