WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is the latest Republican heavy-hitter to come to the aid of Sen. Pat Roberts’ struggling campaign for re-election.

The potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate was in Wichita on Monday for a fundraising event where he told supporters that Roberts would not let them down if re-elected.

Unlike other potential 2016 presidential contenders, Bush has kept a relatively low public profile for much of the year. But he has stepped up his help for GOP candidates as the Nov. 4 midterm election approaches.

His visit comes just days after former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin campaigned with Roberts.

Roberts once was considered a near lock for re-election but now faces a tough battle from independent businessman Greg Orman after the Democratic candidate withdrew.

Grand jury gets 2nd case on Ferguson officer Darren Wilson

CLAYTON (AP) – A St. Louis County grand jury will review another case involving the Ferguson police officer who fatally shot an unarmed 18-year-old.

A judge approved the request by county prosecutors Monday in a case involving a drug suspect arrested in 2013 by officer Darren Wilson. The man’s attorney wants the drug distribution charge dismissed because he doesn’t expect Wilson, who did not attend the hearing, to show up in court.

Wilson received a Ferguson City Council commendation for his role in Christopher Brooks’ arrest. But defense attorney Nick Zotos said his client was “roughed up” by Wilson and also questioned whether his actions merited special recognition.

The grand jury is also reviewing evidence in the early August shooting death of Michael Brown to determine whether Wilson should face criminal charges.

Kansas Man Pleads Guilty to Embezzling Railroad Union Funds

Screen Shot 2014-09-29 at 1.13.58 PMTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The former secretary-treasurer of a railroad union in Kansas has pleaded guilty to embezzling from the group.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a news release that 62-year-old Dale Hull, of Herington, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of embezzling union funds.

The crime occurred while Hull was secretary-treasurer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union that represents Union Pacific employees working in the Herington terminal and the Salina hub.

Hull said that starting in 2008, he made more than $17,000 in unauthorized transfers from the union’s account to his personal checking account. He also filed reports to the U.S. Department of Labor in which he understated his earnings in his union position.

Sentencing is set for Jan. 5.

Kansas man charged in girlfriend’s death

police murderTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Topeka man who police say was naked and bloody before his arrest is charged with premeditated first-degree murder in this girlfriend’s death.

Shawnee County District Court records show Trevor William Adkins was also charged Friday with misdemeanor counts of endangering a child and battery. He remains jailed Monday on $1 million bond in the death of 22-year-old Lacie Atchison.

Police say they found Atchison’s body last Wednesday on the front porch of a Topeka home. A naked Adkins was arrested nearby.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports neighbors called police to report seeing a naked man covered in blood running around the street, screaming and yelling.

Court records don’t indicate that Adkins has hired an attorney.

Toyota recalls 690,000 pickups

RecallDETROIT (AP) — Toyota says it is recalling 690,000 Tacoma pickup trucks because the rear leaf springs could break, puncture the gas tank and cause a fire.

The recall covers Tacoma Four-by-Four and Pre-Runner pickups from the 2005 through 2011 model years.

The automaker says the leaf springs can fracture due to stress and corrosion. They can move out of position and come into contact with surrounding components, including the gas tank. Toyota says it’s not aware of any fires, crashes or injuries from the problem.

Owners will be notified by mail and Toyota says dealers will fix the problem at no cost.

Owners with questions can call Toyota at (800) 331-4331.

Road salt supply low, demand high as winter looms

JEFF KAROUB, Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — The rewards for surviving last winter’s punishing weather are tight supplies and drastic price increases for road salt across much of the U.S.

Local officials in several Midwestern states are facing prices that are twice what they were last season. In some cases, the price is five times as much.

And that’s only if they can get road salt.

Replenishing stockpiles is proving to be a challenge nationwide after so much salt was used last winter, when supplies were diminished by frigid weather and record snowfall.

From Boston to Raleigh, North Carolina, many cities are increasing their stocks by at least 20 percent.

But some local governments are avoiding the problem, thanks to previous contracts or secured bids, or simply being close to salt sources.

A man was transported to the hospital by ambulance Monday after he lost consciousness and crashed his vehicle at the intersection of Belt Hwy and Frederick Ave.

Two separate accidents tied up traffic on Frederick Avenue over the lunch hour Monday.

The first accident took place at Woodbine and Frederick just before noon.  Police responded to the wreck and directed traffic as the two vehicles were removed from the roadway.

Less than 10 minutes later a second accident took place at Frederick Ave. and the Belt Hwy. just a block away.

According to the St. Joseph Police Department, 47-year-old Terry Hager was driving his SUV when he reported to have a medical issue that caused him to lose consciousness and crash into a median and then into a vehicle stopped at the light East on Frederick.  That vehicle was then shoved into another vehicle.  Hager was transported to the hospital for evaluation.  No other injuries were reported.

Traffic was slowed around both intersections for about 30 minutes.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State senior wide receiver Tyler Lockett was honored for his efforts in the return game last week against UTEP as he was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Lockett’s designation was the third for the Wildcats this season and the second in as many weeks as Jake Waters earned the offensive honor following the Iowa State game (Sept. 8) and Dakorey Johnson was the defensive player of the week after the Auburn game (Sept. 22).

The honor was the sixth of Lockett’s career and the Wildcats’ Big 12-leading 27th weekly conference honor since the beginning of 2011.

A Tulsa, Oklahoma, native, Lockett collected 143 punt-return yards, including a 58-yard touchdown, and 256 all-purpose yards to lead K-State to a 58-28 win over the Miners. The 143 punt-return yards were the second-most in school history and 29 yards short of tying the school record of 172. His touchdown was the Wildcats’ nation-leading 92nd non-offensive score since 1999 and his first career punt-return touchdown.

Lockett, who also tallied 84 receiving yards on four catches against UTEP, now has five special teams touchdowns in his career as he has return four kickoffs for scores.

No. 22 Kansas State hosts its first Big 12 contest of the season as the Wildcats welcome Texas Tech to Bill Snyder Family Stadium this Saturday. The game, which is sold out, serves as Fort Riley Day and kicks off at 6 p.m., on ESPNU.
