Joseph L. Toombs
ST. JOSEPH – Joseph L. Toombs, 93, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Carriage Square Health Care Center.
J.L. was born on November 17, 1920 in Darlington, Mo., son of Loren and Lucy (Thompson) Toombs.
J.L. graduated from Darlington High School. He then served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked as an Appliance Repairman for Sears. After his retirement, he continued to work in the appliance repair business. He was a member of the Sears’ Retiree’s Club and Strong Tower Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Marja Roberts and Lily Lane.
J.L. married Joy Elizabeth Weatherd on March 31, 1944 in Troy, Kan. She survives of the home.
Additional surviving family includes daughter, Linda (Dean) Fleshman; sons, Ronald (Kathy) and Randy (Sharon) Toombs; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Billy and Marvin Toombs.
Services 10 a.m., Saturday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph.
Interment Ford City Cemetery, Ford City, Mo. Visitation will begin after 12 Noon Friday at our chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday evening.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Carriage Square Health Care Center.

ST. JOSEPH – Robert “Bob” Lee Hogan, 78, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at his home.
He was born October 20, 1935 in St. Joseph, son of Beulah and Mathew Hogan. He married Elizabeth Shreve on May 20, 1961, and they shared 53 years of marriage prior to her passing away in February of 2014. He graduated from Benton High School, then served in the United States Navy and later in the Navy Reserves – NMCB-15 Seabees. He worked at Fort Leavenworth, in Civilian Service, as a Maintenance Engineer.
Bob was very active in the community volunteering at the South Side Fall Festival (since its beginning in 1988). He and Elizabeth served as Grand Marshalls of the parade, he was also a member the South St. Joseph Progressive Club, King Hill Masonic Lodge # 376, Masonic York Rite, The American Legion Pony Express Post and the former King Hill United Methodist Church. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Bob was also involved with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Olive Hogan; his parents; two brothers, George E. and Marion “Bud” Hogan; and two sisters, Betty Batley, and Lena Thornberry.
He is survived by daughter, Sheryl Davis and husband COL Kenneth Davis of Semmes, Ala.; grandchildren, Seth and Krystal Davis; two brothers, John Hogan and wife Ann of Ashland, Mo., and Charles Hogan and wife Geneva of Newalla, Okla.; nephews, Mark Young and Mike Thornberry whom he practically raised. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. He will be cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. AGENCY, Mo. – Velma L. “Sally” Jones, 88, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 in St. Joseph. She was born June 1, 1926 in Dearborn, Mo., daughter of Julia and George Noland. She married Albert September 23, 1947 in Wathena, Kan., and they shared 65 years together. She was a homemaker who also worked at Nomi Lights and Whitaker Cable.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, canning and having a big garden. Sally was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Albert Lee Jones; three brothers, Jack, Gene, and Tom Jones; two sisters, Josephine Andrus, and Margret Kerns.
Survivors include, son, Danny and wife Sherry Jones of Rushville, MO; grandchildren: Tracy, (Bill), Laura, (Jason), and Tasha (Cody); 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bonnie (Dale) Dreher of Savannah, Mo.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Rupp Funeral Home, with Pastor James Barnett officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., on Friday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Agency Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the. SAVANNAH, Mo. – Jacqueline June Rice, 81, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2014 in a Savannah health care center. She was born October 20, 1932 in Butler, Mo., daughter of Angeline and Omer McDaniel. She graduated from high school, and was a homemaker also working at Noma Lites, H.D Lee and the Stetson Hat Co.She enjoyed square dancing, and was a member of Savannah United Methodist Church.
Jacqueline was preceded in death by husband, James Calvin Rice; her parents, daughter, Judy Bunse; brother, John McDaniel; and an infant sister.
Survivors include daughter, Jody (Robert) Steinman of Savannah; four grandchildren: Holly (Jason) Keller, Brian (Cindy) Spangler, Jennifer (Brian) Parks, and Travis (Rachael) Bunse; and six great grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services and interment will be conducted on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., at the Savannah Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., on Sunday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Online condolence and obituary at www.ruppfuneral.com.
