Mo. health departments seek release of $3.3 million

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — County health departments across Missouri are asking Nixon to release $3.3 million designated for public health projects that he withheld from the state budget.

The Jefferson City News-Tribune reports local public health agencies had planned to receive $2.3 million plus an additional $1 million added by the Legislature, but instead received nothing.

Several health department directors say without the money they might have a hard time paying for food and lodging inspections or communicable disease control.

The Missouri Public Health Association and the Missouri Association of Local Public Health Agencies have asked local health agencies to write letters to the governor. MOALPHA executive director Mahree Skala says two-thirds of the state’s 115 local public health agencies are participating in the letter-writing drive.
