WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Republican Gov. Sam Brownback has vowed during a debate to defend Kansas’ ban on same-sex marriage.

His Democratic challenger, Paul Davis, said Monday that he voted against the ban as a legislator because it would give the state an unwelcoming image. But he also said he respects the decision of voters to approve the prohibition. Davis added that the matter is now in the courts and there is nothing either candidate can do to impact its outcome.

The televised debate at KWCH studios in Wichita was the candidates’ third. Their final debate is Tuesday before the Kansas Association of Broadcasters meeting.

The back-to-back appearances come amid recent independent polling showing the governor’s race has tightened as outside money from has flooded into the state with negative ads.

GOP governors don’t see ‘Obamacare’ going away

RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR, Associated Press

obamacareWASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans may be close to winning control of Congress and more votes to repeal “Obamacare,” but GOP governors don’t see the president’s health care law going away.

Nine Republican governors have accepted the law’s Medicaid coverage expansion for low-income people, despite their own misgivings about big government and strong opposition from state legislators of their own party. Three more governors are negotiating expansions of the program with the Democratic administration in Washington.

The governors’ approach is in sharp contrast to the anti-Obamacare fervor of their party in Congress.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich doesn’t think the Affordable Care Act will be repealed even if Republicans win a Senate majority in next month’s elections. He tells The Associated Press, “That’s not gonna happen.”

MOLINE, Kan. (AP) — The Oklahoma Air National Guard says two of its fighter jets collided over southeast Kansas during a training exercise, with one ejecting from one of the aircraft.

The Oklahoma Guard’s Col. Max Moss said neither pilot was seriously injured in the midair collision Monday afternoon.

Moss said one of the F-16’s returned safely to its base in Tulsa. The second crashed and burned in a field in Kansas.

Moss said the pilot of the crashed plane was taken to McConnell Air Force Base hospital in Wichita for evaluation, but is not believed to be seriously injured.

He said the collision occurred during a training exercise northeast of the Elk County town of Moline.

Northeast Kansas teenager sentenced for death of father

jail prisonOLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A northeast Kansas teenager will spend five years and four months in a juvenile facility for killing his father during a custody exchange.

The Kansas City Star reports the Bonner Springs youth was sentenced in Johnson County on Monday, which was his 16th birthday. He pleaded guilty earlier to second-degree murder.

The fatal shooting occurred in July 2013 outside a Shawnee business where the boy’s mother and stepfather had arranged to turn him over to his 46-year-old father. The mother and stepfather were inside when the teen walked to his father’s car and fired several times with a handgun.

The teen told police and mental health professionals that he had suffered years of emotional, physical and sexual abuse by his father. He was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Apple reports record 39.3 million iPhone sales

BRANDON BAILEY, AP Technology Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple says it sold 39.3 million iPhones in the last quarter, or 16 percent more than a year ago, which is a record for the quarter. That’s partly due to excitement over new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models that Apple began selling last month.

The surge in iPhone sales helped the company beat Wall Street’s expectations for the three months that ended Sept. 27. Overall, the company’s profit rose more than 12 percent from a year ago, to $8.5 billion. Total sales also rose more than 12 percent, to $42.1 billion.

While iPhone sales were up, Apple also sold 13 percent fewer iPad tablets than it did a year ago. That follows an industry-wide decline in tablet sales. But the company reported lower iPad sales than analysts had expected.

World Series traffic has MoDOT urging motorists to prepare

KANSAS CITY – World Series traffic congestion can be expected around the Truman Sports Complex, particularly along I-70 and I-435 from midday Tuesday throughout the early evening. MoDOT urges baseball fans heading to the game to leave in plenty of time to ensure you are parked and in your seat by the 7:07 p.m. start of Game 1.

A sell-out crowd combined with the usual afternoon rush hour traffic can lead to backups and delays for those who are accustomed to normal game-day traffic. MoDOT and Kansas City Scout will do their part to help. Motorists are urged to check up to the minute traffic conditions online before heading out by going to www.modot.org and clicking on the Traveler Information Map, and also to www.kcscout.net for the latest information on delays and congestion. Scout message boards along major routes will help alert motorists to any potential problems.

#CHSiapplied has Seniors at Central High School prepping for college

College Application Week has students looking into their future at Central High School
College Application Week has students looking into their future at Central High School

Central High School is taking college applications to social media as Seniors apply to their schools of choice during College Application Week.

“I’ve applied to Northwest, Missouri Western and University of Central Missouri,” said Central Senior Brittney Davis. “It’s pretty easy so far applying.”

It’s the first year Central High School has held College Application Week. Students are being encouraged to apply to colleges this week and fill out pieces of paper with their name and what school they applied to. Those paper pennants are then placed on a wall in the school and students names are entered into a drawing to try to win a prize. Central is also encouraging students to tweet their school application status to @CHS_Indians with the Hashtag #CHSiapplied.

“We’re asking them to tweet us on twitter so we know who’s applied and where,” said Central High School Teacher, Alicia Saunders. “Most colleges have made it pretty easy. It’s all online.”

Senior Trenton Humbert said he’s applied to Missouri Western, Truman State, and Mizzou.

“I’m thinking I’ll get my first year or two done at Missouri Western then transfer to Truman State or Mizzou,” said Humbert. “I’m thinking about going into the accounting or banking industry.”

Saunders said there are around 350 Seniors that will be graduating this year from Central High School. She hopes a large majority of them apply to college, and the earlier they apply the better.

“We really encourage it at the beginning at the Senior year because the earlier the students apply to college the sooner they’ll be selected, the earlier they can apply for scholarships and financial aid,” said Saunders. “When they apply earlier that means better selection on housing options in residence halls and registration dates.”

Teachers are walking students through the application process online. They are also encouraging students to apply for scholarships and talking to their classes about their own college experiences. Saunders said there are application fees associated with many schools. She said students on the district’s Free and Reduced Lunch Program are eligible for financial assistance with many of those fees.
