Hanaway’s governor campaign receives gift from Sinquefield

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Republican Catherine Hanaway has received a $750,000 contribution toward her 2016 gubernatorial campaign from mega-donor Rex Sinquefield.

The contribution was reported on the Missouri Ethics Commission website Wednesday, the same day that candidates were to file reports detailing their finances through the end of September.

Online records show Hanaway’s campaign received the money from Sinquefield on Monday.

Sinquefield is an investment firm founder who is Missouri’s most prolific individual political donor. His causes include income tax cuts and efforts to revamp public education with school-choice programs and limits on teacher tenure.

Hanaway is the only declared Republican candidate for governor, although State Auditor Tom Schweich could enter the race sometime after his November re-election bid.

Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster also is running for governor in 2016.

St. Louis drops game four of NLCS to Giants; trail series 3-1

riggertCardinalsSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Buster Posey drove in three runs and the San Francisco Giants took advantage of some clunky defense by St. Louis first baseman Matt Adams, beating the Cardinals 6-4 on Wednesday night to move within one victory of the World Series.

Chasing their third title in five years, the Giants lead the best-of-seven NL Championship Series 3-1 after poor throws cost the Cardinals yet again.

October ace Madison Bumgarner can pitch San Francisco to another pennant Thursday night at home in Game 5. Struggling All-Star Adam Wainwright starts for St. Louis, now facing the same daunting deficit the Giants overcame to beat the Cardinals in the 2012 NLCS.

Kansas City awaits the winner after completing its ALCS sweep of Baltimore earlier in the day. The wild-card Royals will host Game 1 of the World Series next Tuesday night.

Mo. man guilty of setting wife on fire

CARROLLTON, Mo. (AP) — A central Missouri man has been found guilty of setting his wife on fire and burning down their house.

KMIZ-TV reports Willard Hunt, of Higbee, was convicted Tuesday night of arson, assault and armed criminal action. The trial was held in Carroll County, where it was moved from Randolph County because of extensive coverage of the June 2013 fire.

Witnesses in the one-day trial included Hunt’s wife, who testified her husband woke her up on June 17, 2013, and asked her, “Are you ready?” before dousing her in gasoline. She said he then ignited the gasoline with a cigarette lighter.

The wife was severely burned over 40 percent of her body. Hunt was apprehended two days later in rural Randolph County, where he’ll be sentenced on Dec. 10.

Big 12 coaches express concern about autographs

Big12riggertKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — After every home game at Kansas, players file out of the locker room at Allen Fieldhouse and spend about 15 or 20 minutes signing autographs. Sometimes, there will be hundreds of fans — many of them children — waiting for their favorite player.

These days, a seemingly innocent way to connect with fans is triggering red flags.

High-profile cases of college football players signing autographs for money, a violation of NCAA rules, has coaches on edge in all college sports — including basketball. Johnny Manziel was investigated last year, though no wrongdoing was found, and Georgia’s Todd Gurley was suspended recently as the NCAA investigates him, too.

“We’ve run it through our compliance in the past and have ways to handle it,” Kansas coach Bill Self said Wednesday during the Big 12’s annual basketball media day.

“Somebody asks for an autograph, the perfect thing to say is, ‘Who do you want me to make it out to?’ If they say, ‘Don’t — just sign your name,’ well, then you automatically know it could be for sale, and with you having no knowledge of it,” Self said.

Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg said coaches talk to their players “all the time, until you’re blue in the face,” but that it’s still hard to monitor everything.

“They’re 18- and 19-year old kids,” Hoiberg said. “They spend a lot more time on their own than they do with the coaches. You do as much as you possibly can by trying to educate them.”

Governor Honors Local Animal Nutrition Firm

Governor Jay Nixon came to St Joseph Wednesday to honor a local animal nutrition company with the Governor’s Award for Agricultural Achievement.

BioZyme manufactures natural feed additives for livestock producers and feed formulators across the country. Nixon was joined by Missouri’s Director of Agriculture Richard Fordyce in a tour of the company’s newly expanded facility. The company employs 65 workers in St Joseph, which marks a 70% increase in employment over the last ten years.

The Governor praised the company for the strength of its exports, which have increase 24% over last year.

“The more products that BioZyme sells overseas, the more jobs they can create here at home, and that’s why my administration has made boosting Missouri’s exports a top priority,” Nixon said.”

“In fact exports of Missouri agriculture products are up nearly 20% over just the last year. From soybeans and cattle to specialty meats and animal-feed additives, it’s no surprise that demand for Missouri-raised, Missouri-grown, and Missouri-made agriculture products has exploded.”

Among other products, BioZyme produces “Amaferm,” a fermented, fungus-based, feed additive that produces more energy and better results when fed to livestock. Biozyme is a participant in the Esxport Missouri initiative, an effort by Governor Nixon to help match Missouri-made goods with qualified buyers in the global marketplace.

CDC confirms Kansas patient does not have Ebola

CDC logoKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A second lab has confirmed that a Kansas City, Kansas, man who came to University of Kansas Hospital this week with Ebola-like symptoms does not have the deadly disease.

The hospital announced Wednesday that the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta had confirmed negative results from a Nebraska lab, and that the patient had been moved to lower-level isolation.

Dr. Lee Norman said Monday the man was a medic on a commercial ship off Africa’s west coast and had treated patients for all kinds of illnesses, including typhoid fever.

The man became ill while on the ship and flew back to Kansas last week. He was placed in tight isolation at the Kansas City hospital because he had been working in an area where Ebola had broken out.
