JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Senate Democrats and Republicans say next session they hope to address the fatal police shooting in Ferguson and the sometimes violent protests that followed.

Party leaders on Thursday said they likely will introduce legislation dealing with issues raised after Officer Darren Wilson shot 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey says Republicans are hashing out what that might look like.

Newly elected Senate Minority Leader Joe Keaveny says discussion topics could range from school funding to job creation to municipal courts.

But House Republicans on Wednesday said they’re reluctant to address Ferguson in legislation. Newly nominated House Speaker John Diehl says those issues might be better tackled outside the General Assembly.

Senate leaders say tensions that erupted following Brown’s death at least deserve a discussion.
