K-State’s Waters named semifinalist for Maxwell Award

riggertKStateKansas State senior quarterback Jake Waters is one of 20 semifinalists for the 2014 Maxwell Award, given annually to the College Player of the Year, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.

Waters is the second Wildcat in the last three years to be named a semifinalist for the award and the third overall as Michael Bishop and Collin Klein were finalists in 1998 and 2012, respectively. A product of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Waters is joined on the list by fellow Big 12 quarterbacks Trevone Boykin (TCU) and Bryce Petty (Baylor) as well as wide receiver Kevin White (West Virginia).

Waters has been effective as both a passer and runner during his senior campaign, accounting for 285.3 yards of total offense through eight games, including 234.8 yards through the air. He has accumulated 300 yards of total offense on two occasions as he totaled 395 yards (290 pass, 105 rush) in a 45-13 win over Texas Tech and 377 yards (239 pass, 138 rush) in a 32-28 victory at Iowa State. His total against the Red Raiders was tied for ninth in school history, while his performance against the Cyclones earned him Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors.

A former community-college transfer, Waters has thrown for at least 200 yards in nine-consecutive games dating back to the 2013 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl victory, the longest streak by a Bill Snyder-coached quarterback. He is on pace for 3,052 passing yards this season, which would be the second-most in school history and the most under Snyder. Additionally, he has gone 183 touches (combined passes and rushes) without a turnover dating back to the Auburn game on September 18.

Three finalists for the 2014 Maxwell Award will be announced on November 24, while the winner will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be broadcast on ESPN on December 11.

No. 9 Kansas State (7-1, 5-0 Big 12) travels to No. 7 TCU (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) for a top-10 primetime matchup on Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. The game, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m., will be shown to a national audience on FOX.

Shields has a week to accept offer from Royals

RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals extended a $15.3 million qualifying offer Monday to right-hander James Shields, which assures Kansas City of draft pick compensation if its staff ace signs a major league contract with another team before June 8.

Shields has until Nov. 10 to accept, and it is expected he will not. In the past two years, none of the 22 free agents given qualifying offers have accepted.

Kansas City has expressed interest in re-signing Shields, who helped the Royals reach the playoffs for the first time in 29 years and win the AL pennant. But with higher-payroll clubs in the market for pitching, Shields is expected to sign elsewhere.

If that happens, the Royals would receive a compensatory draft pick between the first and second rounds of next year’s amateur draft.

Missouri Football vs. Kentucky - November 1, 2014Photo by: Clayton HotzeMizzou Football junior DE Shane Ray (Kansas City, Mo.) has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week, as announced tonight by the league office.  Ray was cited for his outstanding play in helping lead Mizzou to a 20-10 win last Saturday against Kentucky.  In the game, Ray tallied two quarterback sacks to up his season total to 12, which broke the Mizzou single-season record of 11.5, previously co-held by former standouts Aldon Smith (2009) and Michael Sam (2013).

Ray ended the game with five total tackles, the two sacks – which both came on 4th down plays to give Mizzou possession of the ball – while adding a pass break up to his ledger.  It marked the fifth two-sack game of the season for Ray, who now leads the SEC in both sacks (12.0) and tackles for loss (16.0), while ranking second and third in the nation in those categories, respectively.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas political legend Bob Dole says that recent stops in his just-finished tour of the state have him thinking that U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts’ chances of winning re-election are “looking better.”

Dole told The Associated Press on Monday that he believes Roberts has picked up a little momentum and has been getting a good reception at recent events.

The 91-year-old former senator last week finished a months-long tour of all 105 Kansas counties and spoke by telephone from Washington. He was the GOP presidential nominee in 1996 and is a former U.S. Senate majority leader.

Dole made multiple campaign appearances for Roberts and Republican Gov. Sam Brownback.

Roberts is in a close race against independent candidate Greg Orman. The challenger told reporters Monday that he greatly respects Dole.

US investigating Honda for incomplete reports

HondaDETROIT (AP) — Federal regulators are investigating whether Honda Motor Co. failed to report deaths and injuries that occurred in its vehicles.

Federal law requires automakers to submit quarterly reports on deaths and injuries, warranty claims and other incidents. Legal claims alleging that a defect caused a death or injury must also be reported.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says Honda may have failed to report incidents related to Takata air bags as well as other defective parts. Honda has recalled more than 5 million vehicles in the U.S. to fix their air bags, which could injure occupants if they deploy after a crash.

Honda could face fines of up to $35 million if NHTSA finds it failed to report the incidents.

A message seeking comment was left with Honda.

Rivals make last pitches in Kansas governor’s race

Brownback and Davis

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and Democratic challenger Paul Davis are making multiple stops across Kansas as they try to pick up the last few votes ahead of Tuesday’s election.

Davis started Monday by greeting western Kansas voters in Dodge City. He then traveled east to Greensburg, Pratt and Great Bend.

Brownback toured south-central Kansas and had stops in Garden Plain, Derby and Andover.

The governor is pressing his case that personal income tax cuts enacted at his urging have spurred an economic comeback for Kansas.

In Topeka, retired nursery owners Jim and Diane Herynk (HUR’-ihnk) said they voted in advance for Brownback because he lowered taxes as promised.

But Davis told The Associated Press that there’s general dissatisfaction with Brownback over the budget problems his tax cuts have caused.

Courthouse killer dies in Mo. prison

The state Department of Corrections on Monday said Kenneth Baumruk died of apparent natural causes late Friday at the Potosi Correctional Center in southeast Missouri.

Baumruk shot and killed his wife, Mary, at the St. Louis County courthouse in Clayton on May 5, 1992, as their divorce hearing was about to begin. He also wounded both of their lawyers, a security guard and a bailiff, and fired shots at the judge, three police officers and others.

Police returned fire, striking Baumruk nine times, including twice in the head.

Prosecutors said Baumruk had flown to Missouri from his home in Seattle with two handguns in his luggage.
