Kansas City parolee charged in 34 home burglaries

Burglary homeKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Prosecutors say a Kansas City man charged with committing 34 residential burglaries was linked to the crimes by a GPS in an ankle bracelet he was wearing because he was on parole for burglary.

Sixty-four-year-old Roy E. Samuels was charged Wednesday with one count of first-degree burglary, 33 counts of second-degree burglary and 26 counts of theft.

The burglaries occurred in Kansas City between July and September 2013. At the time, Smith was on parole for a burglary in Grandview.

It was not immediately clear if Samuels has an attorney.

Snowy commute keeps officers busy

SJSD with snow distantArea law enforcement officials say there are a lot of problems on area roadways, as folks gear up for the drive to work on roads covered with snow.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there are quite a few slide-off accidents on I-29 south of St Joseph, between here and Faucett. Troopers were also working a number of slide-off wrecks on 71-highway between Maryville and Savannah.

St Joseph Police reiterated the warning about driving south of St Joseph on I-29.  They’re warning us about the area near mile marker 39.4, the site of numerous slide-off accidents.

Sergeant James Langston says the overnight shift was a quiet one for officers, until just before six am, when dozens of wrecks happened.  Langston urges you to reduce speed, allow extra time and exercise caution during your morning commute. He says some of the side streets in St Joe have not yet been treated, and some of them are very slick. Langston says officers worked slide-off accidents on 6th Street, on I-29, and on 759-highway.

No injuries have been reported.

State Rep. Rick Brattin

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) _ A Missouri Republican is proposing that women be required to get notarized permission from the father to receive an abortion.

State Rep. Rick Brattin of Harrisonville recently filed legislation requiring a father’s consent except in cases of rape or incest.

Brattin told Mother Jones that “it has to be legitimate rape.”

Brattin told The Associated Press he wasn’t trying to define “legitimte rape,” but said a woman would need to prove the rape to have an abortion without the father’s permission.

The bill is one of several dealing with abortion that have repeatedly failed, including an identical bill that died in committee last session.

Brattin’s comments spurred critical comparisons to former Republican U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, who said women’s bodies can avoid pregnancy from what he called “legitimate rape.”
