Northwest loses series finale at Emporia State 10-9

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University baseball team fell to Emporia State on Sunday afternoon, 10-9, in Emporia, Kan.

Northwest falls to 19-20 on the year and an even 14-14 in MIAA play. The Hornets move to 26-10 and 17-10 in conference action.

Emporia State got a one out sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to score the winning run.

Steven Garber capped a strong weekend by blasting his fifth and sixth home runs in the game. For the weekend, Garber was 9-for-17 (.529) with three home runs with eight RBI and seven runs scored.

Austin Wulff also had a big day as he finished 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.  Kolby Greenslade was 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, and Garrett Fort was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.

Nikko Pablo started the game, going 2.2 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits. Only five of the runs were earned.

Austin Battaglia went 3.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits. He had three strikouts.

Carson Smith pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out two but was saddled with the loss.

Northwest returns to Maryville for a four-game MIAA series with Washburn starting on Friday at 3 p.m.
