Bearcats lose two games to Washburn Thursday

NWMSUThe Northwest Missouri State University baseball team fell to Washburn twice on Thursday in a doubleheader at Bearcat Field in Maryville, Mo.

Washburn won the first game, 7-2, and captured the second game, 10-3.

Northwest is now 19-22 overall and 14-16 in MIAA play. Washburn improves to 24-17 overall and 17-13 in conference action.

In game one, Kolby Greenslade was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Kevin Handzlik was 2-for-2 with a walk, Nick Gotta was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk and Steven Garber was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Anthony Caenepeel started and went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on six hits. He had three strikeouts.

Patrick Brady pitched the final 3.0 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Only one of the runs was earned.

In game two, Garber was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the second inning.

Johnson was also 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. He hit his third home run of the year in the sixth inning.

Garrett Fort hit his first homerun of the season in the sixth, going 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Joseph Hietpas started and went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Only two of the runs were earned. He struck out seven.

Austin Battaglia pitched 1.0 innings, allowing one hit and one run. He had one strikeout.

Northwest and Washburn will play a doubleheader Friday starting at noon. The opening game will be a seven-inning contest followed by a nine-inning game. Northwest will honor its 2015 senior class between games.
