Drug suspect takes joyride in patrol car

Andrew-County-Sheriffs-PatchA drug suspect is back in custody after taking a brief joyride in an Andrew County Sheriff’s Department patrol car.

Sheriff Bryan Atkins tells us a deputy was transporting the suspect to Kansas City on a Clinton County warrant when she got sick. Atkins says she was handcuffed and in the rear passenger seat when the deputy got out of his squad car to get a sickness bag.

The woman climbed into the drivers seat and sped off. About 15 minutes later, officers spotted the vehicle. She drove the patrol car into some trees near Interstate 635 and K-5 highway in Kansas City, Kansas.

The woman then fled on foot to a nearby residence, and was taken into custody by officers.

Atkins says the Deputy was not injured in the incident, but the female was taken to a local hospital to be check for minor injuries sustained in the event. She was booked into the Wyandotte County Jail.

The case is under investigation by the Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas police departments.

Atkins is withholding the name of the deputy until the investigations are completed. He identified the woman as Delenne Marian Garrett, 42, of Kansas City, Missouri.
