A woman in her 80s who died in Kansas City may be the first heat-related death of the year in the metro area. The Kansas City, Missouri Health Department said on Twitter that the Jackson County Medical Examiner is investigating.
The Health Department tweet indicated that the woman was born in 1931. Officials are not releasing her name or where she lives.
With temperatures heading to the upper 90s and the heat index set to reach or exceed 106 degrees, officials urge you to check on your neighbors, friends and relatives at least twice a day (morning and night).
You should never leave children or pets in closed vehicles. Within minutes, temperatures inside a car can reach over 140 degrees and can kill.
Make sure your outdoor pets have plenty of water and shade.
