St. Joseph opens NBC World Series with 8-4 win over Hutchinson

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs opened the NBC World Series in Wichita with an 8-4 victory over the Hutchinson (KS) Monarchs.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball is making its fifth appearance in their seven years of existance and they’re now 5-0 all-time in first round games.  The Mustangs improve to 36-15 overall this season.

St. Joseph jumped to to a quick lead as they scored three runs in the top half of the first inning.  Josh Cassidy hit a two-out single to score one run and then Tony Maselli drove in two runs on a two-out double.

Hutchinson scored a run in the bottom half of the first and then the Mustangs took control of the game as they scored five unanswered runs, three in the fourth inning and two more runs in the seventh.

All eight St. Joe runs came with two outs.

Trent Hill finished the game 4-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI, while Maselli and Orecio Fisher had two hits each.  Jacob Richardson added two RBI.

Preston Felgate earned his fifth win of the summer as he allowed four runs and ten hits in 6.2 innings of work.

The Mustangs move on the second round of the NBC World Series Sunday as they take on the defending championship Santa Barbara at 4:00 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.
