UPDATE: The St. Joseph Fire Department has extinguished a structure fire near Humbodlt Elementary School.

Crews responded to a fire at 110 W. Cherry St. around 9:30 Tuesday morning.  (Corrected address.)

“It started in a back bedroom, initial crews attacked the fire and got it put out,” said Acting Battalion Chief Tom Rope.

The department had to cut a hole in the roof using a chainsaw to ventilate the fire.

“We force air in and it blows the smoke out,” Rope said. “There’s fans on the other end in the doorway and we just blow it out through the roof.”

The home was currently vacant and was not a threat to the nearby school.

There were no injuries.  The cause of the fire, and the extent of the damage, remained under investigation.
