IRS scam reports increase in St. Joseph

wpid137133-wpid-sjpd-patch1.jpgThe St. Joseph Police Department said residents should continue to be on the lookout for an IRS scam.

“This past week numerous citizens have reported calls from the IRS demanding payment of back taxes,” the department warned Tuesday on Facebook. “The caller is stating that if the money is not paid quickly property will be seized. This scam has been ongoing for some time but has become more frequent recently.”

Police said the IRS does not operate this way.

“The phone calls could be coming from anywhere in the world and most of the numbers are disabled the same day,” SJPD said.

The best advice, if you receive one of these calls just hang up the phone and do not talk any further to the caller.
